What are coupons and how do I use them?

Coupons let you grant your customers lump-sum or percentage discounts. You can also limit coupons to orders for certain products or the usage of certain shipping and payment methods.

Follow these steps to offer coupons. The steps are explained in detail below.

  1. Create a new coupon campaign.
  2. Define the campaign settings.
  3. If necessary, define whether the coupon is to be used only for certain products or when using certain shipping and payment methods.
  4. Generate coupon codes.
  5. Distribute the coupon codes to your customers.

How to create a new campaign

1. In the administration area in the main menu, select Marketing and then Coupons.

2. In the ID column of the table, enter an internal ID for the new coupon campaign.

3. Enter a name for the campaign in the Name column. ID and name can be identical.

4. In the Currency column, select which currency the coupon is valid for. This setting is only relevant if the coupon is to have a fixed value (e.g. €10). The currency cannot be changed later. Leave the Value field blank for the time being.

5. Save the changes.

The new campaign is now created. Next, define the campaign details.

How to define the campaign details

1. In the administration area in the main menu, select Marketing and then Coupons.

2. In the table, select the ID for the coupon campaign that you wish to edit.

3. On this page you can define the settings for this campaign. If you want to send coupon codes to your customers by newsletter, enter all coupon information that could be of interest to your customer in the Description field. This applies in particular to coupons with specific conditions attached. The description will be displayed later in your newsletter.

4. Define the coupon type under Type:
  • Absolute value: Your customer receives a fixed price reduction – €10 off, for example. If the coupon value can be redeemed against delivery costs, select the option also valid for delivery costs. If the coupon is meant to be a gift coupon, select Yes under Gift coupon. If a customer then redeems a gift certificate in your shop, the tax is calculated correctly.
  • Percentage value: Your customer receives a fixed price reduction – 5% off, for example. If the percentage value can be redeemed against delivery costs, select the option also valid for delivery costs.
  • Waive delivery costs: The customer receives free delivery upon redeeming the coupon.

5. In Minimum order value, define whether the coupon can be redeemed from only a certain order value.

6. In Coupon code length, define how many characters a coupon code should contain. Generally, short coupon codes are easier to remember than longer ones, but can also theoretically be guessed by unauthorised persons more easily.

7. In Time frame, you can specify that the coupon must be redeemed within a particular period. If you do not fill in these fields, the coupon is valid for an unlimited period.

8. Set how many coupon codes can be redeemed for this campaign in Number of valid coupon codes. For example, if you enter 20 here, only 20 customers can use the coupon – even if you distributed 100 coupons. This setting can be useful for promotions such as "The first 100 customers who order product X save €10."

9. In Redemption voids the coupon code, you determine whether a coupon can be used several times (No option) or only once (Yes option). For example, if you publish a coupon in a newspaper advertisement, it should be able to be used more than once.

10. Save the changes.

The settings have been saved. Next, you can limit the validity of coupons to certain products, delivery and payment methods.

How to limit the validity of coupons to certain products, delivery and payment methods

You can limit the validity of coupons to certain products, delivery and payment methods. This lets you market certain products or reward customers for using your preferred payment and delivery methods (e.g. advance payment).

1. In the administration area in the main menu, select Marketing and then Coupons.

2. In the table, select the ID for the coupon campaign that you wish to edit.

3. Select Validity.

4. Select the button Assign conditions.

5. On the left, select whether to limit the validity of coupons to certain products, delivery or payment methods.

6. On the right, in the first column of the table, mark the elements you want to limit the coupon to.

7. To define even more conditions, repeat steps 5 and 6.

8. Apply the changes.

Conditions of the same kind are linked with OR, while conditions of different kinds are linked with AND. This means: If you limit the use of the coupon to five products, the coupon is also valid if the customer orders just one of these five products. However, if you have defined as a condition that a certain product and a certain payment method must be used, the customer must fulfil both of these conditions to be able to use the coupon.

How to generate coupon codes

Now you still have to create the coupon codes to pass on to your customers. If you want to send coupon codes to your customers by newsletter, see How do I insert coupon codes into a newsletter?

1. In the administration area in the main menu, select Marketing and then Coupons.

2. In the table, select the ID for the coupon campaign that you wish to edit.

3. Select Coupon codes.

4. On this page you can generate the coupon codes. To define coupon codes yourself, enter the corresponding code in the Coupon code column and save your data. To have codes generated automatically, enter the number of coupon codes in Number and then select Generate codes automatically

If you offer your website in multiple languages, you should enter the content in all these languages. For more information, refer to How do I create content in more than one language?

Coupon campaigns are always valid for just one currency.

If you delete a campaign, all related coupon codes lose their validity.

If you define the period of validity for coupons, take note of any statutory provisions on the period of validity for coupons.
